I think XDS sources are going to be the key concept towards getting other o-logy images and documents into the XDS Registry and repository VNA environment.

There are 3 types of metadata items in XDS
1. Patient related
2. Author related
3. Document related

The key issues for XDS Sources are going to be:
1. Could NHS users use a barcode to input patient ID (in addition to typing the patient ID) on the XDS source application?
2. How will the XDS source vendor get rest of the patient demographics information from ? Is it via vendor own ADT updated Demographics Database OR directly from our MPI via HL7 QBP query OR via IHE PDQ query if there IHE standards based PDQ provider. I personally think a XDS-VNA should support a PDQ query for both XDS sources and XDS consumers from ANY vendor!
3. Will XDS source vendors database hold “author” information for “author metadata” on XDS using the windows log-in information to query and populate the “author metadata”—name, job-role, specialty and institution etc? HL7 MFN maybe quite handy here.
4. The user would need to “choose” the appropriate “metadata form” or (could be fixed to the machine—if that machine/computer only produces a certain type of clinical documents—like an audiogram) which will populate the fixed document related XDS metadata—which is fixed for a document type.

Key to paperless NHS is going to be good solutions for XDS sources for adding other ologies and using XDS based VNA.
